Console Gaming Turning into a high growth trajectory

By Raghav Soni

The common perception that Console gaming has not evolved onto a higher orbit in India seems to have taken a beating.

A FICCI-KPMG report recently estimated that the Gaming Console related market would fledge into a Rs 940 crore market by 2013 from Rs.410 Crore market currently.

The reckoning forces in Indian market are Microsoft and Sony who have officially launched their gaming consoles. The growth of 25% in Console gaming market is quite comparable to 36 percent market growth expected to be registered in PC gaming segment which is set to reach Rs. 2740 crore by 2013.

Microsoft has earlier gone a step ahead and launched Xbox Live where registered users can download demos of yet-to-be released title, along with other freebies. It has also launched a heavy budgeted Ad campaign and currently has a library of 250 arcade games for XBOX Live.

Sony whereas is looking for Local cult games to capture the pie.Their focus is to develop localized content thus attracting audiences preferring Indian storylines. They recently applied this tactic by launching Hanuman: Boy Warrior, a Console game for PS platform based on Indian animation film Hanuman.

The competition amongst Console makers is to Capture a larger pie of Console market despite it being a low margin as the main cash cow for this business is the Game sales and additional services in the long run.

The localized content may not be sufficient enough to achieve the targeted growth rate as Most Console gaming users are from Urban areas inspired heavily by western games and prefer to buy those titles. So the lower pricing of gaming titles might averse the scenario and turn this nascent industry into a high growth one.

There is also a huge potential for Many Value Added services on consoles as the internet scenario betters in future and attracts more aspirers to its fold.
